Through dance we connect to something timeless, where tradition and innovation meet to stir intrigue. Having the honour to bring the stories of artists of African descent to the mainstage is both a dream realized and a celebration of legacy, artistry, vision, and spirit. Thank you to Rob and Lily and everyone at FFDN to help make this possible. This evening invites you to celebrate artists of exceptional calibre that will inspire you to let movement resonate through you and reveal how dance can heal.

Dickson Mbi Company

Duende

We are all visitors in the object world, stepping in and out of the light of reality. All of us, too often prey to the habit of concealing our souls and their living history, for the invitation to connect with another human being - to see a live spirit of the artist who overcomes these human fears and the ingrained habit of concealment to step in to a zone of self-disclosure. And through the ritual of dance, this solo reveals a fairy tale, generating emotion from these moments of light.

DUENDE was produced by Akram Khan Company as part of 'Portraits in Otherness' at Sadler's Wells, Lilian Baylis Studio on 5-6 June 2018. Special thanks to Armand Amar, Kenny Ho, Thomasin Gülgeç and Patricia Rianne for their creative input in the studio; and to Andreas Reyneke for his Pilates body work training leading up to this work. This project was supported by One Dance UK's Trailblazers Fellowship.

'Portraits in Otherness' was co-produced by Akram Khan Company. Sadler's Wells London and Peacock Contemporary Dance Company China. Created with support of Capital Group. Supported by Arts Council England.

Born in Cameroon, Dickson Mbi grew up in London, creating ground-breaking hip hop performances and inspiring a new generation of dancers. As a dancer with Russell Maliphant Company and Boy Blue Entertainment, his award nominations include Best Achievement in Dance (UK Theatre Awards 2017), Outstanding Male Performer & Emerging Artist (National Dance Awards), and Times Breakthrough Artist Award (Sky Arts Awards 2018).

Rooted in his early training in the street dance form of popping and the amalgamation of dialects that organically emerged from many contemporary dance performances, Dickson’s unique form of expression is fashioned and fuelled by the desire to unite, connect, and create through the human experience. He has a distinct and compelling artistic voice, making work that reflects our times and the human condition, as well as his personal heritage.

As a choreographer, his first full-length solo, ENOWATE, won the 2023 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance. His choreographic commissions include Sadler’s Wells, Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet, Barbican and Scottish Ballet. His journey into dance and choreography was the subject of a 2018 BBC documentary.

A self-taught musician, Dickson began composing in 2016 and his score for TWICE BORN: was released in 2025 by Chester Music label.

Esie Mensah Creations

ESHI

Performed by the dancers of Esie Mensah Creations and the Company Life Program students at Canada’s National Ballet School, ESHI (from the Ewe language, meaning “water”) is a new dance work that navigates the quiet violence and unexpected grace of grief.

Developed through Esie Mensah’s signature Afrofusion movement language, the piece flows like water between rupture and release, tension and surrender. Grief is portrayed as a force that arrives in waves—sometimes small and navigable, other times overwhelming—stealing breath and destabilizing ground.

At its core, ESHI is a meditation on surrender and resilience. It asks what it means to be guided by something beyond our control, and how healing can emerge even when we are unsure of the path. The body becomes a vessel, water becomes a guide, and grief becomes a choreography of survival, memory, and release.
